Fancy joining Bo’ness Community Council?

Community groups in Bo’ness are being urged to nominate people to join the town’s community council.

Five places for representatives are now available. Any organisation interested should send names, contact details and a short biography to the Community Council.

Chair Madelene Hunt said: “There’s a wealth of amazing groups in the town. I hope some of their members can join us on our committee.”

The Community Council meets on the second Wednesday of every month, upstairs at Bo’ness Library.

Nominees would be expected to regularly attend meetings and take a full part in the work of the community council.

Members have recently been lobbying for improvements at Bo’ness Library. The Council was also instrumental in getting a Mining Memorial installed in the town centre – and the impressive Bridgeness Slab replica off Harbour Road.

Madelene said: “In addition to getting involved in community projects, we raise issues on behalf of residents with public bodies such as Falkirk Council. We’re often asked to comment on things like planning applications, licensing issues, the local environment and community planning.

“All community councillors are volunteers and receive no payment for their roles, other than out-of-pocket expenses. However, there are huge rewards for those involved - in playing a part in the life of the town and speaking up for the area.”

Any group interested in nominating someone should email: info@bonesscc.org.uk

* Mrs Hunt also passed on her condolences to the family of Mrs Isobel McLaren, who died in Ivybank Care Home in Polmont earlier this month. Mrs McLaren was the widow of local journalist John McLaren, the first secretary of Bo’ness Community Council. After his death, the Council began awarding a new annual honour – The McLaren Trophy – to a leading community group or individual.

Madelene said: “Isobel and her family have been strong supporters of the McLaren Trophy over the years and I was sorry to hear of her death. I’d like to pass on my sympathy to all those who knew and loved her.”
